The History of the Playboy Mansion
Among he significant greystones and stately co-ops on tree-lined State Parkway, stands the Playboy Mansion at 1340 North State Parkway, a stunning example of turn-of-the-century Beaux-Arts splendor, designed by architect James Gamble Rogers. Best known for his academic commissions throughout the country, Mr. Rogers is responsible for many Gothic revival structures at Yale, Columbia and Northwestern Universities. Among his many other designs are the Yale Club of New York, Burnham Park Plaza, Chicago, and The Harkness Mansion at 75th Street and Fifth Avenue, New York.
Originally designed in 1908 as a 72-room home for Chicago socialite Dr. George Snow Isham, the mansion was owned by Playboy Enterprises from 1959 to 1989 and for many years it served as the original Playboy Mansion. In 1985, it was leased to the School of the Art Institute for classes and student housing and in 1993 it was painstakingly restored to its original grandeur and converted into seven luxurious condominiums by Chicago developer Bruce Abrams, ranging in size from 3,400 SF to 7,490 SF.
